Affordable SEO Tools: 15 That Are Genuinely Worth Paying For

You do not need a $500/month tool stack. These are the affordable SEO tools we actually use, what each one replaces, and what you can skip entirely.

The standard SEO tool stack costs more than most small businesses spend on SEO itself. Ahrefs, Semrush, Screaming Frog, a rank tracker and a content tool comfortably exceed $500 a month before anyone has done any work.

You do not need most of it. Here are the tools that genuinely earn their cost at a small-business budget, what each one replaces, and — more usefully — what you can skip entirely.

Start With the Free Tools That Nothing Replaces

1. Google Search Console — free

The single most valuable SEO tool and it costs nothing. It is the only source of your actual query data: what people typed, what you ranked, what got clicked. Every paid tool estimates this. Search Console knows it.

The highest-value report is Performance filtered to queries where you rank positions 8 to 20. Those are pages Google already considers relevant that need a modest push — usually the cheapest wins available.

2. Google Analytics 4 — free

Unloved but necessary. Without conversion data you cannot tell profitable traffic from vanity traffic, and you cannot run the numbers in calculating SEO ROI. Set up conversion events properly before anything else.

3. Google Business Profile — free

If you serve a local area this is not a tool, it is the channel. Profile completeness, categories, services, photos and posts directly drive map pack visibility. The full checklist is in Google Business Profile optimization.

4. PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse — free

Core Web Vitals diagnostics straight from Google, using the same field data Google uses. No paid speed tool offers anything meaningfully better for a small site.

5. Screaming Frog — free up to 500 URLs

The best technical crawler available, and the free tier covers most small business sites entirely. Finds broken links, redirect chains, missing titles, duplicate meta descriptions and orphan pages. The £199/year licence is worth it above 500 pages and not before.

The Paid Tools Worth Buying

6. One keyword research tool — $99–$129/month

You need exactly one. Ahrefs and Semrush are both excellent and buying both is waste. Ahrefs has the better backlink index; Semrush has broader marketing features. At small-business scale the difference will not change your outcomes.

If $99 is too much, Ubersuggest and Mangools sit around $30–$50 with less accurate data — which matters less than people think when you are targeting long-tail terms with obvious intent.

7. A rank tracker — $20–$50/month

Only if your keyword tool does not include one. For local businesses a grid-based tracker showing rankings across your service area is genuinely worth paying for, because ranking at your own address tells you very little about ranking three miles away.

8. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools — free for your own site

Frequently missed. Verify your domain and you get backlink and site audit data for your own property at no cost. Not a substitute for the paid tier — you cannot analyse competitors — but excellent for monitoring your own profile.

9. A schema generator — free

Merkle's schema markup generator and Google's Rich Results Test cover everything a small site needs. Paid schema plugins mostly wrap the same JSON-LD in a nicer interface.

10. Screaming Frog's log file analyser — £99/year

Niche but powerful for larger sites. Shows what Googlebot actually crawls rather than what you assume it crawls. Essential for ecommerce with faceted navigation, as covered in our ecommerce SEO checklist. Skip it under a few hundred pages.

11. Keyword Surfer or a SERP overlay — free to $29/month

Browser extensions showing volume and competitive data directly in search results. Convenient rather than essential, but the free versions cost nothing and speed up research meaningfully.

12. A citation management tool — $99–$149/year

For local businesses only. BrightLocal or Whitespark will find inconsistent NAP data across directories far faster than doing it manually. Worth it once, then largely unnecessary — the method is in our guide to local citations.

13. Google Sheets — free

Not a joke. Keyword mapping, content calendars, link tracking and internal linking plans all live perfectly well in a spreadsheet. Most dedicated SEO project tools are a spreadsheet with a subscription attached.

14. Grammarly or LanguageTool — free to $12/month

Content quality affects performance indirectly through engagement. The free tiers are sufficient.

15. Wayback Machine — free

Underrated for diagnosis. When rankings drop, comparing your current page against its historical version often identifies exactly what changed and when.

What to Skip

Automated link building tools. Everything they build is worthless at best. See bad backlinks for what these actually produce.

Multiple keyword tools. Diminishing returns are severe. One is enough.

"SEO score" plugins. Green lights for keyword density optimise for the plugin, not for Google.

AI content generators as a strategy. Useful for outlines and first drafts. Publishing the raw output at volume is the fastest route to a site full of pages nobody links to.

The Realistic Minimum Stack

Search Console, Analytics, PageSpeed Insights, Screaming Frog free tier, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and one paid keyword tool. That is roughly $99 a month and covers the large majority of what a small business needs.

Worth noting what that comparison implies: $99 a month buys you a keyword tool and nothing else. It cannot also pay someone to use it, which is the arithmetic behind our breakdown of SEO cost per month and the reason affordable SEO services start where they do.

Tools do not do SEO. They tell you what to do. If you have the hours to act on what they show you, this stack is genuinely enough — and if you do not, our SEO packages include the tooling and the hours together.
