Google Business Profile Optimization: A 22-Point Checklist for 2026 — ToggleWeb guide

Your Google Business Profile is the highest-leverage asset in local SEO, and the only major ranking factor you control completely. No competitor can outspend you on it. It costs nothing. And in most local markets a meaningful share of competitors have filled in roughly a third of it.

Work through these twenty-two optimisations in order. The first eight matter far more than the rest.

Foundations

1. Use your exact real-world business name

No keywords, no city names, no descriptors you do not use on your signage. "Smith Plumbing Denver Emergency 24/7" is a guidelines violation, a common cause of suspension, and it breaks NAP consistency against every citation you own. This is the single most frequent serious error.

2. Get the primary category exactly right

Your primary category is the strongest relevance signal on the profile. "Plumber" and "Plumbing Contractor" are different categories with different result sets. Search your main keyword, look at which businesses rank in the map pack, and check what they use.

3. Add every legitimate secondary category

Secondary categories expand the queries you can appear for. Add every one that genuinely applies — and none that do not, since irrelevant categories dilute relevance and can trigger review.

4. Fix your address or set the service area properly

If customers visit you, the address must be exact — including suite number. If you travel to customers, hide the address and define your service area. Showing an address you do not serve customers at is a violation. Do not list a virtual office or mailbox; these get suspended.

5. Use a local phone number, consistently

A local area code beats a toll-free number as a locality signal. Use the same number here as on every citation. Call tracking numbers on the profile break NAP consistency — use a dynamic number insertion setup on your website instead.

6. Set accurate hours, including special hours

Hours affect visibility for "open now" filtered searches. Set holiday hours in advance. A profile flagged by users as having wrong hours loses trust signals.

7. Link to the right landing page

Not always the homepage. If you have a well-optimised location or service page matching the profile's primary category, link there. For multi-location businesses always link to the specific location page.

8. Write the business description properly

750 characters. It is not a strong direct ranking factor but it is read by customers deciding whether to call. Lead with what you do and where, include your main service terms naturally, and do not keyword-stuff it.

Services, Products and Attributes

9. Add every service individually

The services section accepts individual entries with their own descriptions. Most businesses add two or three. Add all of them — this is free, structured relevance data that helps you surface for specific service queries.

10. Use the products section even for services

Product entries appear prominently on mobile, carry images and descriptions, and are underused outside retail. Service businesses can list packages here effectively.

11. Complete every applicable attribute

Wheelchair accessible, women-owned, free wifi, appointment required, LGBTQ+ friendly. Some are directly filterable in search, and completeness itself appears to correlate with performance.

12. Fill in the opening date

A small trust signal, and it takes ten seconds.

Media

13. Upload genuine photos, regularly

Storefront, interior, team, work in progress, completed jobs. Real photos, not stock. Profiles with more photos receive measurably more direction requests and clicks. Add a few every month rather than thirty once.

14. Add a video

Thirty seconds is enough. Very few local competitors do this and it differentiates the listing visually.

15. Set a logo and cover photo deliberately

Google chooses what to display, but these influence the choice and control how the profile appears when it is your brand being searched.

Reviews

16. Build a systematic review request process

Review count, review velocity and review recency all feed prominence. Ad-hoc asking produces ad-hoc results. Ask every satisfied customer, at a consistent point in the job, using a short link.

17. Respond to every review

All of them, positive and negative, within a few days. Response rate is a visible quality signal to customers and appears to matter to Google. Negative reviews answered calmly convert better than no negative reviews at all.

18. Encourage service mentions in reviews

Review text is indexed and contributes to relevance. You cannot script reviews, but asking "would you mention which service we did?" is legitimate and effective. Never offer incentives — that is a violation.

Ongoing Activity

19. Post weekly

Updates, offers, events. Posts expire after seven days, so consistency matters more than volume. Weekly posting is a strong freshness signal and takes minutes.

20. Seed and answer the Q&A section

You can ask and answer your own questions, and doing so is explicitly permitted. Populate the questions customers actually ask before someone else fills the space with something unhelpful.

21. Enable messaging only if you will answer it

Response rate is visible. Slow replies are worse than not offering messaging.

22. Check the profile monthly for unauthorised edits

Google accepts edits from the public and from data providers. Categories change, hours shift, competitors occasionally submit malicious edits. Check monthly.

What This Does Not Fix

Profile optimisation improves relevance and prominence. It cannot change proximity — you will not rank in a suburb fifteen miles away regardless of how complete your profile is.

It also does not fix inconsistent citation data working against you, which is covered in local citations, or an absence of local authority, which is what local backlinks addresses. The complete sequence is in our local SEO guide.

Profile optimisation and weekly posting are included in our local SEO services plan at $500 a month, but everything above is genuinely free to do yourself. If you only act on one section, make it the first eight.
