SEO Backlinks: How Links Work and Which Ones Actually Move Rankings — ToggleWeb guide

Backlinks have been declared dead every year for a decade and remain one of the strongest observable correlates of ranking position in competitive commercial niches. Understanding why they still work tells you far more than any list of tactics.

This guide covers how Google evaluates links, which signals genuinely matter, and how to judge whether a link is worth acquiring.

Why Links Still Carry Weight

Google's original insight was that a link is an editorial vote that costs something to give. That logic still holds, and it holds for a reason that is easy to miss: everything else is free.

On-page optimisation costs nothing and everyone does it, so it cannot differentiate. Content quality is cheap to produce at volume, especially now. Links require someone else to act, which is precisely what makes them expensive to fake and therefore useful as a signal.

What has changed is not the importance of links but the distribution of value. A decade ago a weak link helped slightly. Today a weak link does nothing at all, and the gap between a good placement and a poor one is enormous.

The Signals That Actually Matter

Relevance

The most important and most underweighted factor. A link from a mid-sized site in your industry outperforms a link from a large general site with no topical connection.

Relevance operates at three levels: the domain's overall subject, the specific page's subject, and the immediate paragraph. All three contribute, and the paragraph matters more than people assume — a link about commercial roofing inside an article about houseplants passes very little regardless of the domain.

Authority — with a caveat

Authority matters, but the metrics used to measure it are easily manipulated. Domain Rating and Domain Authority are third-party estimates, not Google signals, and both can be inflated cheaply by pointing links at a dormant domain.

A better proxy is organic search traffic. A site receiving substantial traffic from Google has demonstrated something Google actually trusts. Our guide to authority backlinks covers how to distinguish real authority from an inflated number.

Placement

A link inside body content, surrounded by relevant text, in a position a reader might plausibly click, passes more than one in a footer, sidebar or author bio. Site-wide footer links across thousands of pages are worth roughly the same as one link, sometimes less.

Anchor text

Anchor text tells Google what the destination is about. It is powerful and it is the easiest thing to overdo — an unnatural concentration of exact-match commercial anchors is one of the clearer manipulation patterns.

Natural profiles are dominated by branded anchors, URLs and generic phrases, with exact-match terms as a minority.

Uniqueness of referring domain

Fifty links from one site are worth far less than five links from five sites. Referring domain count, not raw link count, is the number to track.

Dofollow, Nofollow and the Rest

The rel attribute became more nuanced when Google moved to treating nofollow as a hint rather than a directive, alongside sponsored and ugc.

Practically: followed links are what you are acquiring, but a natural profile contains nofollowed links too — social platforms, major publications and Wikipedia all apply them by default. A profile with 100% followed links is itself an unnatural pattern. The detail is in dofollow vs nofollow backlinks.

How to Judge Whether a Link Is Worth Acquiring

Five questions, in order of importance:

  • Does the site get real organic traffic? If not, nothing else matters.
  • Is the content topically coherent? A site publishing about crypto, dentistry and roofing in the same month is a placement service, not a publication.
  • Would a reader plausibly click this link? If not, it is decoration.
  • Do its outbound links point at unrelated commercial pages? A visible pattern of selling links.
  • Would you be happy for a customer to see the page? Surprisingly reliable.

The Link Types, Ranked

Roughly, from most to least valuable: editorial links earned through digital PR; contextual links in relevant guest posts; niche edits in established, relevant articles; resource page links; genuine local and industry directory listings; then a long gap; then profile links, comments, and anything automated, which are worth nothing.

The full breakdown, including which types carry actual risk, is in types of backlinks.

How Many You Need

There is no universal number and anyone who quotes one is guessing. The answer depends entirely on the referring domain counts of the pages currently ranking for your keyword.

The method is straightforward: pull the top ten results, look at referring domains to each ranking page and to its domain, discard the outliers, and take the median as your target. Full process in how many backlinks do I need.

How to Get Them

Three durable approaches. Digital PR — original data or research pitched to journalists; the highest ceiling and the least predictable, covered in digital PR. Outreach-based placements — guest posts and niche edits on relevant sites. Earned links — genuinely useful resources that accumulate citations over time.

What consistently does not work: automated tools, link exchanges at scale, private blog networks, and directory blasts. These were marginal a decade ago and are now worthless or harmful, as covered in bad backlinks.

The Practical Summary

Prioritise relevance over authority metrics. Use organic traffic rather than Domain Rating to assess a site. Track referring domains, not links. Keep anchor text predominantly branded. And accept that a small number of genuinely good placements will outperform a large number of mediocre ones by a wide margin.

If you would rather not run outreach yourself, that is what our link building services do — and every placement is reported with a live URL, which is the only way to verify any of this. Managed monthly volumes are on backlink services.
